The Sinister Syndicate is one of the reasons why I love Spider-Man so much. Spidey has SOOOOOOO many cool villains that they've formed multiple teams in order to defeat him. The Sinister Syndicate is the first of TWO Spider-Man villain teams in this tournament. Modeled after the original Spider-Man villain team-up the Sinister Six, the Syndicate debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #280 (September 1986) and were created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. The orginal lineup is same lineup we are using for the tournament.
BEETLE - Abner Jenkins was a gifted airline mechanic who turned to a life of crime. He built himself an armored suit complete with wings and called himself The Beetle. Over time he would evolve his armor to make it more dangerous. His suit allows him the following abilities: superhuman strength and durability, flight via artificial wings, variety of weapons systems including electric blasts from his gauntlets. Beetle is also highly intellegent and a natural leader. Although he's been known to butt heads with other members of the team over his decisions.
BOOMERANG - Fred Myers was a world-class baseball pitcher but was kicked off of his Major League Baseball team for accepting bribes. He was then contacted by the Secret Empire who saw potential in his abilities. With some training with boomerangs, a super suit, and rocket boots BOOMERANG was born! His "powers" are: highly skilled marksmen and street fighter, wields a variety of lethal and gimmicked boomerangs (like a Razorang or a Electrorang), and can fly via flight boots. He's not the deadliest foe Spider-Man has faced, but he's definitely more than just a nuisance. He adds an extra threat element to the team.
HYDRO-MAN - Morris Bench is his real name. He can manipulate water the same way the Sandman can manipulate sand. Other abilities include - expert street fight and superhuman strength. Hydro-Man is kind of a dope, but his powers give him a lot of lethal potential.
RHINO - real name: Aleksei Sytsevich. Was just a thug who worked for some Eastern Bloc scientists. The scientists did some experiments that would give him artificial skin and superhuman strength. The skin became permanently grafted to him. Rhino then decided to use his new suit to become a career criminal. He is actually one of Spidey's toughest villains. His suit allows him superhuman strength, speed and durability; as well as high-level resistance to damage and extreme temperatures. He has razor sharp horns attached to his head.
SPEED DEMON - James Sanders, originally known as The Whizzer. Given his abilities by the Grandmaster (a Celestial, one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe). He's basically a speedster, like The Flash (but not as fast) with enhanced stamina and reflexes.
SHOCKER - Herman Schultz has been a thorn in Spider-Man's side for decades. Herman is a career criminal who invented a suit that allows him to deflect physical attacks, resistance to being grasped, and gauntlets that project powerful concentrated vibrational air blasts. The Shocker is very very dangerous.
While these guys aren't the BIG Spidey villains, they're also very tough in their own right. Individually they can give Spider-Man one hell of a fight, but as a team they are deadly.
Their first round fight is against the Guardians of the Galaxy. A tough fight, but it should be interesting!
