Friday Night Fights - Tournament's 1st Round Bracket recap

Oh man, what a busy week! I've been busting my butt working on these team breakdowns, researching for the #GoTMondays, booking guests for the Good Shit Podcast (NOW AVAILABLE on soundcloud! Click here for the full episode!) So, I am giving my brain a rest today, so there will NOT be a one on one Friday Night Fights this week, BUT I will recap all of the Tournament fights we discussed yesterday.

Let me start off by thanking my guests from the Good Shit Podcast yesterday. Austin Roberts and Josh Spradley were perfect guests for the first round! We really missed Jimmy, but I was very happy that we could get both Josh and Austin to help out. Austin is a big fan of Dungeons & Dragons and therefore knew just how important Magic users were in this tournament and so it was great to have his expertise to help explain just how dangerous characters like Mumm-Ra are. So, thank you, one more time Josh and Austin, you guys are welcome back anytime!

First match was a great way to warm up for the next few fights. It was the SilverHawks vs. the Teen Titans. I played the theme songs from both of their cartoons while we introduced each team. It was fun, you really should LISTEN TO THE EPISODE! (we start discussing the actual tournament around the 32 mintue mark, if you want to skip ahead). Anyway, so as I said this was a great warm up for the next 3 fights, because while the SilverHawks were a great team that won a lot of victories in their universe; they really had no chance against the Teen Titans. What won it for the Titans, wasn't the numbers, but they are just too powerful. The SilverHawks are humans with enhanced cybernetics, but the Teen Titans have SUPER POWERS! Cyborg alone could render the SilverHawks' cyber parts inactive very quickly. So match 1 went to the Teen Titans.

Fight 2 was the Sinister Syndicate vs. the Guardians of the Galaxy! This fight was a perfect follow up from what felt like a warm up. Our first strategy discussion came up here and we all decided that each team would simply square off against one another. Right away, Drax and Rhino started trading haymakers like a heavyweight prizefight, that would keep them busy. Groot and Speed Demon faced off, with the that wonderful dichotomy of Speedster vs. Strong Guy. In the end, Groot's resiliance won out against Speed Demon's...uh....speed. Speed Demon was able to hit Groot with some devastating attacks (he would stick his hand somewhere inside Groot's body and vibrate at crazy speeds until exploding). Groot would heal himself, but wound up catching Speed Demon with a strong shot and knocking him out. Yondu faced off against Boomerang. Boomie didn't have much chance against Yondu's arrows, because as good of a hurler as he is, he doesn't hold a candle to Yondu's arrows accuracy. Mantis went down against Hydro-Man, but Gamora took out Beetle with little trouble and Star-Lord beat the Shocker with some help from Rocket. Then the numbers really turned against the Sinister Syndicate. Drax and Rhino were still going at it as the Guardians watched them for a couple of minutes before joining in and finishing off Rhino. Winner: Guardians of the Galaxy

The next fight is when things started to get really interesting. Unfortunately Josh had to leave to go to work, but Austin and I were able to discuss the last two fights and decide on winners easy enough. So what made this fight interesting was that it introduced our first MAJOR magic user in Mumm-Ra. While, Raven was a member of the Teen Titans, she was not needed for them to beat the SilverHawks. In this fight, Mumm-Ra would be the toughest opponent.

The X-Men vs. Mumm-Ra & the Mutants - To pad the numbers, Jimmy and I added some SilverHawk villains to the team. So the two big baddies of Mumm-Ra and Mon*Star were teaming up as well as their goons. For the Mutants we had, Slythe, Jackalman, and Monkian all of which were quickly dealt with by the X-Men. There wasn't even a talk about it, we just figured the X-Men were too good against those 3. That left the two Mon*Star henchmen: Hardware and Windhammer. Storm dispatched Windhammer, as their powers were similar but Storm was stronger and used a strong bolt of lightening to strike Windhammer's tuning fork. Hardware was a bit tougher of a fight, but even he would go down against 2 X-Men. That left Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living and Mon*Star in battle form riding a giant space squid. Mumm-Ra would use his magic to keep Colossus confused and fighting against Wolverine, and also to keep Gambit stuck in a dome of fire. But the combo of Cyclops' optic blasts and Jean Grey's mental interference, Mumm-Ra would become too distracted to keep up his spells, thus dropping the confusion spell on Colossus. Once Wolverine was free from defending himself from his friend, he quickly sliced his way through the giant squid's tentacles and killed Mon*Star. That left all of the X-Men to face Mumm-Ra, who would prove to be a true coward and chose to teleport himself away rather than fight.
Winner: The X-Men

Last fight on the docket for the day was X-Factor vs. The Crime Syndicate! This one was a lot of fun because we got to talk about magic vs. super powers, and get a little tease of what the Justice League will look like, because the Crime Syndicate is the evil version of the Justice League. Anyway, once again there was not much of a strategy discussion here. We talked about it and decided that the Syndicate would charge head on against X-Factor with Ultraman, Superwoman, and Johnny Quick leading the charge. Ultraman would face Strong Guy and a true meeting of the Unstoppable Force meeting the Immovable Object would happen. Strong Guy has the ability to absorb kinetic energy and make himself stronger, and Ultraman just started punching away. This would go on for some time; eventually Ultraman would start feeling overwhelmed by exerting so much energy just to have it hit him in the face with twice as much power. So Strong Guy won there in a very nice surpise. Polaris easily dispatched Grid, without killing off his consciousness, but destroying his body. Johnny Quick and Quicksilver had an awesome speedster battle, but Quicksilver would win after Johnny's dependence on his "speed-juice" kicked in. The Multiple Man faced Superwoman and this is where the tide started to turn. Superwoman caught Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox) in her Lasso of Submission, killed his other dupes and kept torturing Madrox until he died. Because he was bound by the lasso, he was unable to create another dupe. Mazahs hung back, and picked off Havok quickly with a lightening strike followed by a powerful flying punch. Owlman and Beast would fight, and Owlman's gadgets helped give him the victory. Deathstorm fought Iceman, and Deathstorm's powers would prove to be too much against Iceman's cold manipulation. Mazahs would use his magic lightening and power to take out Polaris, and then the combined might of the Crime Syndicate finished Strong Guy for the victory.

Winner: The Crime Syndicate

So the first round 2 matches will be the Teen Titans vs. The Guardians of the Galaxy, and the X-Men vs. the Crime Syndicate. Round 2 is already looking awesome!

We had a lot of fun discussing these fights, and it made the tease for our next episode's first round match up even more exciting! Next Good Shit episode will feature the results of the most anticipated fights of the first round: the Marvel Big Bad Guys (Red Skull, Dr. Doom, Dormammu, Loki, Abomination, Ultron, and the Mandarin) vs. the Inhumans; He-Man & the Masters of the Universe vs. the JUSTICE LEAGUE (oh man, we can't wait for this one!), the THUNDERCATS vs. THE AVENGERS (another great one we can't wait to talk about); and what could be the most fun discussion: the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vs. the Universal Studios Movie Monsters (Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein's Monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy, and maybe an added surprise)!

Stay tuned to this blog for the next batch of team breakdowns and then be sure to check out our next episode of the GOOD SHIT Podcast to hear our discussion and results of each fight! Thanks for reading/listening! Let me know what you think so far, and who you think will win the next four fights!
