#GoTMondays Tyrion = Secret Targaryan???

In preperation for my annual GoT series re-watch, I am gathering together my favorite theories to see if they hold any water. Today we're going to take a look at a controversial theory that says Tyrion Lannister might actually be a Targaryan.

You might have heard about this theory before, but if not, it's a good one. I, for one, don't believe it's true and think it's actually better story writing to make Tyrion, Tywin's true son. Tywin was all about mainting honor for his legacy and Tyrion was a constant thorn in his side. Often telling Tyrion that he was, "no son of mine".

Tyrion is one of the most popular characters in the Game of Thrones, and one of my personal favorites. He's a very complex character, leading a very tragic life. The hatred he felt from his father began at his birth. When, due to complications, Tyrion's mother Joanna died while giving birth to him. This was something both his father and sister would never let him live down, nor forgive him for.

Joanna herself must be mentioned as well. It is said that before her death, Tywin was a different man, but after she died Tywin "forgot how to laugh". Also, before Joanna's death, Tywin was Hand to King Aerys II aka the Mad King. Before he became known as the Mad King, Aerys was known to have quite a crush on Joanna. He was even overheard at the wedding of Joanna and Tywin, drunkenly saying, "..that it was a great pity that the lord's right to the first night had been abolished." The rest of the quote from the book went like this, "A drunken jape, no more, but Tywin Lannister was not a man to forget such words, or the...liberties your father took during the bedding." - from a convo between Daenarys and Ser Barristen Selmy in A Dance with Dragons. This doesn't necessarily mean that Aerys slept with Joanna that night, just that something DID happen. However, this was way to early before Tyrion was born.

It is, however, entirely possible that Aerys may have forced himself on her while she stayed in King's Landing while Tywin served as Hand. If this is true, it could be the real reason Twin hates Tyrion so much. George R.R. Martin is great at making his readers believe one characters feelings for another is for one reason but later their true feelings are revealed and it's not something the readers were thinking.

What are some other facts that could be evidence to support this theory? Well, let's look at Tyrion himself. When he was born, it was said that he had a tail, and looked deformed. I've read that Targaryans were often born with tails that would fall off before their first year, which made them believe even further that they were actual descendants of dragons. Tyrion has also mentioned, a few times, that he had dragon dreams. Dreams of him either flying on a dragon or flying AS a dragon. Now this could  be because of his fascination with dragons, and could have happened after reading several books combined with a child's overactive imagination. Plus, Tyrion was always incredibly smart, so reading about dragons and fanstasizing about riding one is not farfetched. He even asked his father for a dragon when he was a little boy. He tells this story to Dany's dragons while removing their chains last season. But from what I have read, the only people that have ever had dragon dreams are Targaryans. If Tyrion is the son of the Mad King and Dany's half brother, it would explain why her dragons took to him so quickly.

This theory also adds another (possible) head to the "the dragon has 3 heads" prophecy. If Dany is the Mother of Dragons and rides Drogon, and Jon is her nephew and rides Rhaegal (because his father was Rhaegar), then that leaves 1 person to ride Viserion. I would love it if Tyrion was the 3rd head of the dragon! He doesn't HAVE to be a Targaryan to ride a dragon though. There were many other dragonlords in Valyria along with the Targaryans, and Tyrion is smart enough to teach himself to become a dragonlord.

What do you think? Is Tyrion a secret Targaryan? If he is, what does that mean for his relationship with Daenarys? Does that improve his position? Maybe he'll become the Lord of Dragonstone instead of Casterly Rock?
