GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - TEAM TOURNAMENT BREAKDOWN

I would be surprised if anyone hadn't at least heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) by now, just from how popular the movie was. The GotG have actually been around since 1969, with their first appearance being in Marvel Super-Heroes #18. The original team introduced back then: Major Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex, and Yondu Udonta. The only name there that may sound familiar is Yondu Udonta who appeared in the movie terriffically played by Michael Rooker. Yondu will also be a part of today's team.

Jimmy and I decided to go with the same lineup as the one that will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 next year.

STAR-LORD - Peter Jason Quill is orphaned at 10 years old, after watching his mother get murdered by an alien race called the Badoons. Peter kills them and runs away before his house is destroyed. He grows up in an orphanage and then joins NASA. Later, he's stranded in space and is captured by a group of Ravagers, captained by Yondu Udonta. He joins the group and takes on a life as an outlaw, calling himself the Legendary Star-Lord.

Quill is a master strategist and problem solver; an expert in close-quarter combat, various human and alien firearms and battle techniques. He wears a suit that makes him stronger and increased durability as well as the ability to travel through space. He carries what's called an "Element Gun", described as a meta-pistol that can project one of the four elements (air, fire, earth, and water).

GAMORA - Adopted daughter of Thanos. Trained to be an assassin and raised to be a weapon that can kill The Magus, the evil version of Adam Warlock. These guys are MAJOR COSMIC-LEVEL bad guys (That's why they're not gonna be in this tournament). Gamora is a great representation as to why the Guardians of the Galaxy are so awesome. I would not say that any of them individually have Cosmic-Level powers, but they are all capable of dealing with Cosmic-Level beings. Gamora is awesome. Known as the Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe, she is a highly trained assassin and gymnast. A master of martial arts with super human strength, speed, agility and durability. She also has an accelerated healing factor. Gamora on her own is an extremely difficult opponent, and so she brings a lot to the team.

DRAX the DESTROYER - in the comics, Drax was once a man named Arthur Douglas, who had a wife and daughter. One day they were attacked and killed by Thanos (although his daughter would survive. She would be adopted by Thanos' father, Mentor, and later become Moondragon. A very powerful character in her own right). Arthur is resurrected in a powerful new body. He is renamed DRAX the DESTROYER and his sole purpose is to rid the universe of Thanos! In order to do that, Drax's new body had superhuman strength, stamina and resistance to physical injury. He could also project concussive blasts of cosmic energy from his hands, and fly through space at high speeds without needing air, food, or water. When he first appeared, and up til around the mid 00's, Drax was always drawn as a pretty big dude with this obession of killing Thanos. After the Annihilation event, he's much smaller and looks more like Dave Bautista does in the movie. Also like the movie, he has taken to fighting with knives. His power also seems to increase the closer he gets to Thanos.

ROCKET - A cybernettically enhanched racoon. Rocket is an intergalactic bounty hunter with genius-level intellect. He's also a master tactician and field commander, expert marksman and sniper, as well as an accomplished starship pilot. And while he has the normal physical attributes of an Earth raccoon, he has the fighting spirit of a dozen of them.

GROOT - Rocket's best bud and hired muscle. Groot is a living plant, who also seems to have a telepathic connection to Rocket. The duo have traveled the galaxy together hunting bounties. He is able to absorb wood to feed and rebuild himself as well as enhance his strength. He can control trees and can regenerate. Also worth mentioning is that he is resistant to fire! Cool! You would think that would be his greatest weakness BUT NOPE! HA! Groots a cool guy and quite the bad ass.

MANTIS - I don't know much about Mantis, only that she'll appear in the next year's GotG Vol. 2. But her abilities include: grandmaster level in martial arts, plant manipulation, accelerated healing factor, and astral projection (meaning that she can travel on a different plane of existence). I don't know how helpful she'll be in a fight, but we'll see!

YONDU - full name is Yondu Udonta. He is an original member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and the captain of the Ravagers, a group of space pirates. In the comics, Yondu carries a bow and arrows made of special metal that responds to different sound octaves. Yondu is able to whistle at different octaves that control the direction (not speed) of the arrows. He's so good at this that he can make the arrows return to his quiver or his hand or even weave it's way through a crowd. He doesn't have any super powers but is a natural mystic and like the other species of his home planet, Centauri IV, he possesses a sixth sense that allows him limited empathic relationships with other lifeforms. In combination with this Yondu has a mystical rapport with nature and can sense foreign bodies or substances hiding within them. He can even sense other mystical beings and forces as well as their activities. Yondu can also put himself into a trance in order to commune with natural forces to replenish his inner strength.

As I said before, these characters may not have Cosmic-Level powers, but they are able to keep up with other beings that are Cosmic-Level; like Thanos, or the Magus, Adam Warlock, or the Collector. Seriously powerful people, but these people can fight them. That's why they're called the Guardians of the Galaxy!
